| Mysterious Skin |
Dir. Gregg Araki US 2004
The Bad Boy of "New Queer Cinema," Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, The Living End) directs his most mature work to date and adapts Scott Heim's acclaimed novel, Mysterious Skin. "The summer I was eight years old, five hours disappeared from my life" narrates Brian Lackey (Brady Corbet), a troubled 18 year-old, plagued by nightmares involving alien abduction. Neil McCormick (Joseph Gordon Levitt), on the other hand, is the ultimate beautiful outsider, wise beyond his years and curious about his developing sexuality. The boys share a history of sexual abuse, which remains unknown to one of them. Now, ten years later, Neil is living the dangerous life as a teenage hustler in NYC, while Brian's voyage of self-discovery leads him to Neil. Mysterious Skin explores the hearts and minds of two very different boys, who come to find the key to their future happiness lies in the exorcism of their collective demons. (99m)
