| The Great Yokai War |
Dir. Takashi Miike Japan 2005
One of Japan's premiere goremeisters, director Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) takes on the fantasy genre in this environmentally-themed tale. The Great Yokai War combines Hollywood themes with Japanese folkloric elements as well as images and characters gleaned from contemporary Japanese culture. The result is an extravagantly demented, live-action fantasy reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro). The hero of the The Great Yokai War is Tadashi, a 10 year old boy who is chosen to become the next Kirin Rider, a warrior who will save mankind from the forces of darkness. As Tadashi begins his quest, he encounters many yokai (benign ancient demons) who have been turned into monsters by an evil wizard. They take on fantastic forms, including an elastic-necked geisha and a one-eyed ambulatory umbrella! With help from some friendly spirits, Tadashi faces a cosmic battle to the finish. (123 m)
