Dir. Richard Linklater US 2006
This haunting film, set in the near future in Southern CA, imagines a world in which 20 percent of the population is hooked on an illegal drug called Substance D. Undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) goes after the drug dealers by disguising himself in a "scramble suit," a high-tech device that obscures his identity with shape-shifting images of human faces. The device works so well that Arctor, who becomes addicted to the drug, ends up spying on himself. Linklater artfully applies the rotoscoping technique honed in A Waking Life to this adaptation of a Philip K. Dick novel, and the animation techniques are brilliantly suited to this striking visual dreamscape. Although written in 1977, Dick's work about domestic surveillance has an uncanny relevance to today. With Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson. (100m)
