El Topo
Dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky Mexico 1970
This '70s midnight cult hit is a kind of surrealistic spaghetti western (think Luis Bunuel meets Sergio Leone). It combines allegorical meaning, Mexican folkloric iconography, religious symbolism and Eastern philosophy in a tale about El Topo (played by Jodorowsky), a black-clad gunfighter on a quest for enlightenment. Our story begins with the violent and visionary El Topo riding through the desert and discovering a village whose inhabitants have been massacred by bandits. He rescues a woman who then leads him on a mission to find and defeat the Four Master Gunmen of the Desert. Any synopsis of the plot cannot do justice to the macabre, tormented images and metaphysical constructs which the movie conjures up. In the 70s, the era of hallucinatory films, this one was definitely the most far out, man. (125m)
