The Holy Mountain
Dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky Mexico 1973
This is one of the most original and hauntingly metaphysical films ever made. A messianic thief (Horácio Salinas) is found in the desert with a face full of bees and survives crucifixion by way of a limbless little person - and that’s just for starters! He journeys to the rainbow-striped domain of The Alchemist (played by Jodorowsky himself), and, with the help of special planetary masters, they attempt to reach the Holy Mountain to learn the secrets of immortality from the gods on its summit. All the while, costumed frogs and lizards re-enact the conquest of Mexico. The amazing soundtrack features jazz masters Don Cherry and Ronald Frangipani. This cinematic masterpiece has been in extremely limited release since 1973. (114 m)
