| The Host |
Dir. Joon-ho Bong South Korea 2006
Disturbingly enough, the opening scene in The Host is based on a real incident that occurred on a military base in Seoul, when an American officer ordered his Korean assistant to dump toxic chemicals. In The Host, this environmental crime leads to a mutation of monsterous proportions: a hideously hungry sea creature that gobbles up people and spits them out in its secret sewer-lair! The beast terrifies all of Seoul, and in particular, the dysfunctional family of Nam-il Park, a dimwitted oaf who runs a snack stand on the shore of the river. When his beloved daughter is captured by the creature, Nam-il and his family have to work together to get her back. Meanwhile, bumbling authorities (including sinister Americans) claim that the creature is carrying a mysterious virus, and are out to get the Park family and quarantine them. Director Bong deftly weaves together a monster movie with popculture and social commentary and the result is serious entertainment that satisfyes like a big bowl of ramen. A runaway blockbuster hit in Korea, the brilliant computer graphics were generated by SF’s own Presidio-dweller, The Orphanage. In Korean with subtitles. (119m)
