From the streets of Paris to the concert halls of New York, legendary French singer Édith Piaf’s life was a constant battle. In La Vie en Rose, she is embodied by Marion Cotillard (A Very Long Engagement). Born into abject poverty and raised in her grandmother’s brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplée (Gérard Depardieu). Piaf’s passionate romances and friendships with some of the greatest names of the era - Charlie Chaplin, Jean Cocteau, and Marlene Dietrich - made her a household name. Piaf developed morphine and alcohol addictions following a car accident in 1951, and eventually succumbed to liver cancer in 1963 at the age of 47. Piaf remains, however, one of France’s immortal icons, and her voice is one of the indelible signatures of the 20th century. (140m)
