Dirs. Brad Bird & Jan Pinkava US 2007
The latest from Pixar (Toy Story) and writer-director Bird (The Incredibles) is already being hailed as an animated classic. In this captivating tale, we meet a rat named Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) with incredibly refined tastebuds and rare culinary skills. Remy ends up at Gusteau’s, a once-legendary restaurant where he befriends Linguini, a lowly dishwasher. Under Remy’s tutelage, Linguini convinces everyone that he is a great chef, when it is actually Remy who is calling the shots. But before they can restore the restaurant to greatness, they must confront a sour head chef (Ian Holm), and a snobbish food critic (Peter O’Toole). By combining a compelling and heart-warming story with the usual awesome Pixar animation, Bird provides a lighthearted but ultimately satisfying concoction. But then what would you expect from a film on which Thomas Keller, the legendary chef of Napa’s French Laundry, was a consultant? (110m)
