| Donnie Darko |
Dir. Richard Kelly US 2001
Any film opening in the days following Sept. 11, 2001 was doomed for failure, espcially if it featured an airplane engine crashing into a suburban home. Such was the fate of Donnie Darko. Its dark imagery about a teenager, Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) who has visions of a demonic bunny who predicts the end of the world, could not have been more ill-timed for a nerve-jangled American public. Though this cult classic was re-released in 2004 as a director’s cut, we are proudly showing the original version, and its themes of apocalyptic teen anxieties and conservative family values are as timely today as ever. The soundtrack features Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears For Fear, Joy Division and Duran Duran. With Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Patrick Swayze. (133m)
