Dir. Laura Dunn US 2007
This lyrically powerful documentary from executive producers Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven) and Robert Redford deals with the environmental perils of unchecked urban sprawl. Back in the 80’s Texas developer Gary Bradley wanted to expand a mega- subdivision in Austin despite its effect on a fragile aquifer, Barton Springs. The community united to block this overdevelopment and the battle raged for years until lobbyists and politicians (including then Gov. George W. Bush) accomplished an end-around. Cinematographer Lee Daniel (who shot many of Richard Linklater’s films) provides hauntingly beautiful images and the film features interviews with Redford, Willie Nelson, former Governor Ann Richards, and environmentalist Wendell Berry among others. This showing celebrates the Red Vic’s going solar - as described in the box on this calendar our building has solar panels now! Join us to celebrate the reduction of our carbon footprint as we present this compelling cautionary tale which is a microcosm for land use issues everywhere. (88m)
