Dietmar Post, Lucia Palacios Germany 2007 The Monks were 5 American GI’s who met while stationed in Germany in the mid 1960’s and became one of the most radical bands of all time. Sporting seriously odd haircuts and all-black clothing, the group was one of the first marriages between art and popular music, appearing on the scene before Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground. Billed as the ‘anti-Beatles’, their noisy, stripped down rock with fuzzy guitars, lots of feedback and a driving beat is considered by many to be precursors to industrial, punk and techno music. Although the band was a commercial failure and split up in 1967, their album Black Monk Time continued to be a cult favorite, and was finally re-released in the US in 1997. This documentary recounts the story of this highly influential avant-garde band and finally gives them their due. With Genesis P-Orridge, Jon Spencer and Peter Zaremba of the Fleshtones.
