Vivre Sa Vie
Jean-Luc Godard France 1962
The beautiful actress Anna Karina was the love of Godardís life, but in Vivre sa Vie he turned her into a vibrant and existentially tormented prostitute, in probably their best collaboration as husband and wife. The story is a gangster tale set in a chic underworld milieu with quirky song and dance routines, cafť posturing and idiosyncratic philosophizing, but it is the ennui-laced street scenes of Paris (shot in stunning high contrast black and white by Raoul Coutard) and Godardís heartfelt and energetic attempts to deconstruct the medium that make Vivre sa Vie so remarkable.(subtitled; 82m)
