Nosferatu the Vampyre
Dir. Werner Herzog W. Germany/France 1979
The extraordinary German filmmaker Werner Herzog recreates the F.W. Murnau classic 1922 silent film, Nosferatu, as well as Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, infusing the source material with his singular vision. Frequent Herzog collaborator Klaus Kinski (Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo) mesmerizes as Count Dracula, and his stylized performance emanates an underlying sense of pathos amid the horror. Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) plays Jonathan Harker, the naive real estate agent who travels to Transylvania to meet the Count. When Dracula spies a portrait of Jonathan's beautiful wife (Isabelle Adjani) he becomes obsessed with her, setting into motion a series of tragic events. Herzog presents stunningly original visual images, including a virtual sea of rats fleeing a ship, which convey an eerily atmospheric mood, underscored by a suitably haunting score by Popol Vuh.
