| The Muppet Movie |
Dir. James Frawley UK/USA/Australia/Japan 1979
We learn the origins of the Muppets in this comic masterpiece for kids of all ages. Kermit was hanging out in the swamp playing banjo before a chance encounter with a big-time agent (Dom DeLuise) convinced him to hit the road and head for Hollywood. Along the way shenanigans occur with the rest of the gang - Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Rowlf the Dog, and, of course, Miss Piggy. But they must stay one step ahead of the evil fast-food-chain magnate (Charles Durning) intent on opening a French-fried frog-leg franchise! Chock full of cameos, including Mel Brooks, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Orson Welles and in their last film appearance, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. The first of the Muppet films, it is arguably the gold standard in the genre. (95m)
