| A Christmas Tale |
Dir. Arnaud Desplechin France 2008
Director Desplechin (Kings and Queen) presents this funny and tempestuous tale of the drama that unspools as three generations of a dysfunctional French clan gather to celebrate Christmas. Presiding over all is the matriarch, Junon, magnificently portrayed by Catherine Deneuve. Junon has leukemia, and the family hopes for a compatible blood marrow donor. This leads to the return of estranged son and black sheep Henri (Mathieu Amalric of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), banished from the family years before by his sister, Elizabeth. Forced into the role of mediator is the youngest son, Ivan (Melvil Poupaud), whose wife, Sylvia (played by Chiara Mastroianni, Deneuve’s real-life daughter) doesn’t get along with his mother. As we groove to the wildly eclectic score featuring Mendelssohn, Mingus, Gershwin, Vivaldi and hip-hop, we watch, transfixed, as long-held family secrets are revealed and explored.
