Belle de Jour
Dir. Luis Buñuel France/Italy 1967
Severine (played by the exquisite Catherine Deneuve) is a respectable, but bored young Parisian wife with a decidedly kinky side to her sexual fantasies. They lead her to secretly work in a brothel, but only in the afternoon, so she can return home to her surgeon husband in the evening. At first the arrangement works, but complications arise when a young gangster (Pierre Clémenti) falls for her. Buñuel, who as a young surrealist made Un Chien Andalou with Salvador Dali, continued to demonstrate his subversive side in this iconic, erotic tale which still has the capacity to shock and amuse forty-one years after its release. Often called Buñuel’s masterwork, Belle de Jour is as evocative as it is enigmatic. (101m)
