| Two or Three Things I Know About Her |
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard France 1967
This socially and stylistically avant-garde film is considered by many critics to be Godard’s greatest. Juliette (Marina Vlady) is a suburban housewife who moonlights as a part-time hooker, driven to prostitute herself by the ever-accelerating demands of an increasingly consumerist culture. The “her” in the title refers to the city of Paris itself, which was going through a modernization boom in the late ‘60’s. The widescreen photography by Godard’s longtime collaborator Raoul Coutard (Contemp, Alphaville) has been gorgeously restored to better showcase its 60’s pop-art kitschy sensibility. This densely layered, highy political cinematic essay finds Godard at his most exhilarating and thought-provoking. (87m)
