The Wild Child
Dir. François Truffaut France/US 1970
The Wild Child is based on the real-life story of the Wild Boy of Aveyron, a feral 12-year-old who was found wandering naked in the forest in 1798. Unable to speak, the young boy (Jean-Pierre Cargol) is placed under the care of a humanistic young doctor, Jean Itard (François Truffaut). Perhaps it is because New Wave director Truffaut (The 400 Blows, Small Change) was raised in an orphanage that he so frequently returned to the themes of childhood and human development. In The Wild Child he revisits this topic with one of his most compelling films. The new 35mm print shows off the brilliant black-and-white photography by Nestor Almendros, as well as the enchanting Vivaldi score. (86m)
