The Warriors
Dir. Walter Hill US 1979
When this cult classic was released in 1979, America was still recovering from Vietnam, mindless disco ruled and punk rock was in its nihilistic beginnings. In New York City, the South Bronx was burning out of control because firemen refused to go into the dangerous neighborhood. Set in a sort of post-apocalyptic, pre-Giuliani New York and peppered with lots of “can you dig its”, The Warriors is a highly entertaining and nostalgic artifact of urban life during this time. The plot involves one long night for The Warriors, a groovy gang of leather-vests who stand falsely accused of assassinating the charismatic leader of New York’s biggest street gang. As they fight their way from the Bronx to their home turf of Coney Island, our boys are attacked by an amazing array of gangs, each sporting their own special fashion statement: from flowing purple pimps to old-time gangsters, an all-girl gang called The (ahem) Lizzies, a bunch of evil-looking mimes, and the famous Baseball Furies. When first screened, it was rumored that gang fights broke out and the film was nearly banned. It turns out these reports were fabricated by censorship nuts who didn’t want the film released, but the scuttlebutt only added to the film’s mystique. (93m)
