Sin Nombre
Dir. Cary Fukunaga Mexican/US 2009
Each year, tens of thousands of Central Americans leave their families in the hope of gaining successful, though illegal, entry into the United States. But the passage to the U.S. first requires crossing Mexico. Sin Nombre tells the story of Sayra (Paulina Gaitan), a teenager from Honduras who, with her father and uncle, risks this difficult journey. Riding on top of a US-bound freight train through the Mexican countryside, her life intersects with Willy (Edgar Flores), a member of the notoriously violent Mara Salvatrucha gang. This award-winning debut from director Cary Fukunaga is both a love story and a thrilling chase film, offering a devastating portrait of hope and desperation. (96m)
