Big Man Japan
Dir. Hitoshi Matsumoto Japan/Spain 2009
Godzilla meets Spinal Tap in this truly unique send up of 1950's monster movies. The film depicts the everyday life of Daisatou, a middle-aged slacker who occasionally transforms into a stocky, stick-wielding giant called Dai-Nipponjin. As a mega-superhero, he is the defender of Japan from a host of bizarre, computer-generated monsters, such as "Mean Look Baddie" and "Smelly Badie." But the bottom has fallen out of the market for superheroes, and while his predecessors were national heroes, he is a pariah among the citizens he protects, who complain about the noise and destruction of property he causes. Director and star Hitoshi Matsumoto, well-known in Japan for his uniquely odd comedy, offers this intelligent cinematic satire that puts a wickedly deadpan spin on this B movie genre. (113m)
