| Amarcord |
Dir. Federico Fellini Itsly 1973
Amarcord means “I remember” in the dialect of the Italian region where Fellini grew up, and this charming and whimsical tour-de-force is a semi-autobiographical account of his youth in pre-war Italy. Equally bawdy and nostalgic, its episodic plot features a teenager, Titta (Bruno Zanin), who serves as Fellini’s alter ego. He comes of age in a mythical town full of larger-than-life characters, including the outrageous buxom beauty parlor owner, Gradisca (Magali Noel). Fellini’s unflinching examination of 30’s Italian fascism keeps the film from anything approaching easy sentimentality, and in the end, the film is imbued with the enduring power of the human sprit. It contains one of longtime collaborator Nino Rota’s most memorable scores, and took an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The gorgeous restoration of this 35mm print was supervised by the film’s cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno. (127m)
