Let the Right One In
Dir. Tomas Alfredson Sweden 2008
Let the Right One In is a tale of friendship between Oskar, a meek twelve-year-old boy who is constantly bullied by his classmates and his new neighbor, Eli, a pale, serious young girl who happens to be a vampire. In tune with Francois Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, Let The Right One In masterfully evokes the trials of adolescence without mawkish sentimentalism, however within the framework of an unlikely genre. The cinematography and art direction captures a winter fantasyland that sets a beautifully dark atmosphere for this compelling film, yet the fantastic sound design maintains a sense of realism. Capped off with a truly unforgettable climax, it is easy to see why Let The Right One In appeared on so many critics’ top-ten lists of 2008. (Swedish w/English subtitles). (114m)
