| XANADU |
Dir. Robert Greenwald US 1980
What exactly is Xanadu? Some say it’s a campy 1980 movie starring Olivia Newton- John as a Greek Muse who comes to earth to inspire a painter to greatness by opening a roller rink. Others say it is a state of consciousness induced by watching the film. We’re not saying. Needless to say, this cult film is either a horribly misunderstood piece of filmmaking decades ahead of its time, or a guilty pleasure. The film co-stars Gene Kelly in his last role, who may well have wondered about it all, but who busts some vintage moves nonetheless. Also in the mix: oodles of roller skating (and roller dancing!), classic songs, an off-the-charts-color scheme, state-of-the-art cheesy ‘80s special effects and lots of beautiful people. In addition to Newton-John, the soundtrack features Electric Light Orchestra, Cliff Richard and (SF’s own) The Tubes. Did we mention Olivia Newton- John? So what is Xanadu? As she says in the film: “Use your imagination.” (93m)
