| Inglourious Basterds |
Dir. Quentin Tarantino US 2009
Perhaps Tarantino’s oddest project to date, Inglourious Basterds is a revenge fantasy that pays homage to a subgenre of the Spaghetti Western known as Macaroni Combat. Nazi soldiers, led by the “Jew Hunter” (Christoph Waltz in a creepily charismatic performance), attempt to exterminate the Jews in Nazi-occupied France, but a rival gang is causing their own brand of havoc. “The Basterds,” led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), are a group of Jewish-American soldiers instilling fear in the Third Reich by gruesomely killing as many German soldiers as possible. Trading in his familiar milieus—B-movies, Blaxpoitation, two-bit gangsters, and kung-fu philosophy—for a WWII period piece may seem like a misstep, but Tarantino infuses the film with his pop sensibility and movie-love and continues to thrill the fans.
